Why have emergency food storage?
Before you start your own emergency food storage you have to ask yourself WHY you want to have it. What are your reasons for having an emergency food storage?
Your emergency food storage
Getting your emergency food storage ready is not going to be a 2 day thing; it’s going to take at least a couple weeks but more likely it will take months. To get through those weeks and those months ask yourself why you want an emergency food storage. What are your reasons to get it?
If you’re a mom with 3 kids you’ll have different reasons and different needs than a young couple living together without kids.
Make your list of reasons as long as you can. The more reasons you have the better. This way you can fall back to reading your list of reasons when the going gets tough. You’ll remember all the reasons and they will help you get back your motivation and get back on track.
The main reason to have an emergency food storage
The main reason for most people is simple: survive. Others extend the reason a bit: to survive comfortably. Surely you can store 6 large buckets of wheat and rice for an emergency but that’s not going to be “comfortable survival”. So if your goal is to “survive comfortably and to have enough food to feed your family for up to 6 weeks” you should vary your food storage somewhat.
Be specific
Make your reason for having an emergency food storage as specific as possible. The more specific you are the better it will stick with you and your family. Instead of simply writing down “I store food to survive” expand it to “I store food so my girlfriend and I can survive a food shortage for 8 weeks”. Adapt it to suit your needs and your goals.
Write your reasons down and nail it to a wall
Write down all your reasons for having a food storage and put it up on a wall somewhere where you will run into it several times a week. This way you’ll be reminded to keep storing food. Every time you go to the supermarket for groceries you’ll have this nagging feeling at the back of your head to buy two can of soup instead of one.
Different for everyone
Every family has different needs, is in a different situation and will have different reasons for storing food. Do not be afraid to stand for your reasons and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. If your parents in law mock your efforts wait until they show up at your door hungry as disaster strikes…
