Finding a place for your emergency food is usually an issue. You will have to be clever about this. If you live in a medium suburban home this is probably not so much of a problem for you as it will be for people living in a small apartment in New York. Adapt your food storage to your situation and be smart about stuff.

You can store anywhere!

Start thinking of every place you see in your home as a storage place. You don’t (and shouldn’t) keep all your food in one space; it calls for unwanted attention and if the room gets damaged by fire or flooding ALL of your food will be wasted. It’s better to store food in small caches around your house.

Think of locations like:
-    Cupboards
-    The basement
-    The garage
-    A garden shed (mind that not all food can take this way of storage)
-    Under your bed
-    In suitcases you don’t use every day
-    Under the kitchen sink
-    Create a (preferably waterproof) box next to the washer
-    Clear out some clothing and store your emergency food at the empty shelves
-    Use deep bookcases create 2 layers: one of food, one of books in front of it
-    Under the stairs
-    Coffee table (get a large case, fill it with food, cover it with a place or table cloth)

The list can go on and on.

Here’s a little exercise for you: after reading this article walk around in your home and find at least 5 spots where you can store food. Not everything has to be able to accommodate buckets!
