Which emergency food is actually “best” will vary from family to family. If you don’t have much space but enough cash you could go for the freeze-dried meals. They take up little space, can stay fresh for up to 25 years but they cost a lot per meal.
If you have the space and you need some food stored quickly you can just opt for basic foods in airtight Mylar bags in buckets. This way you can cheaply set up your emergency food storage by buying a load of beans, rice and whole grains in large packs and make sure they stay in excellent shape by packing them in Mylar bags.

Dehydrated foods shouldn’t be missing from your long term food storage either, but they have less of a shelf life. Their shelf life is generally three to four years, which is way shorter than freeze-dried foods or food stored airtight.

Expand later

You’d best start out with the basics: the rice, the whole grains and the beans. Get at least one bucket of each stored away and you can rest easy that at least you’ll have some food at hand. Later you can expand your food storage with more long term storage food such as MREs and other freeze-dried meals.

Now that you have a food storage it’s important to remember to rotate through your supplies! The phrase “eat what you store, store what you eat” is always your main guideline: eat from your storage and replenish your storage immediately after you ate something from it.
Rotating through your food storage will keep shelf life up at a high level and it will save you the headache of having to either remember or keep books on which food to eat when.
