What is an Emergency Food Storage
Disaster can strike at any moment. We’ve seen this with sudden storms, Katrina, flooding, earthquakes etc. The number of incidents and disasters only seems to increase the past two years. So what would you eat if your supermarket is suddenly empty for the coming weeks or if you’re trapped in your home for 4 weeks because of a blizzard?
In these situations an emergency food storage would come in handy wouldn’t it? It would help you survive for a couple weeks to a couple months, depending on your situation.
What kind of food do you store?
An emergency food storage is not a set amount and type of food. What kind of food you store and how much you store varies greatly with your situation. If you live in a city you’re likely to have less space for an emergency food storage than someone living out in the countryside.
There are some general rules to the kind of food you store. For instance it has to have a long shelf life. You don’t know when you’re going to need it and you don’t want to have to check up on it every week. Emergency food such as freeze-dried food can be stored for up to 15 years, so that certainly qualifies. Other foods you can store are canned foods and dehydrated food.
How much do you store?
How much food you need in your emergency food storage depends on your conditions. Do you live alone in an apartment in New York or do you have a family of 6 living in a suburban home? The more people your family has the more you’ll need to store. It’s as simple as that.
Then there’s the question for how many days you store food. The general advice is to have at least 2 weeks of food in your home, but most people tend to stock up food to survive 3 months without trips to the store. You simply won’t know how long a crisis is going to last.
